Drying Herbs and Flowers

There are many methods to dry flower petals and Herbs! I'm going to go over the methods that most people will be able to do in their own home.

When foraging for herbs and petals that you plan on using on your skin or ingesting you need to make sure that you are being a responsible forager! Do not trespass or go onto private property. Don't pick other peoples flowers and herbs unless you have explicit permission. As a rule of thumb don't forage in neighborhoods and public spaces. If the lawn or plants have been chemically treated then it is not safe to ingest or use on the skin. This is why people go into the woods to forage!

Air drying:

  1. Remove any leaves and bits that are not the flower, ,f drying herbs remove what you don't want from the plant

  2. Group your flowers together and tie the stems with a string

  3. Attach the flowers to something that they can hang from, out of the way of direct light and high traffic areas

  4. Leave for up to four weeks until they are completely dry.

  5. Keep the flowers whole or pick the leaves for intended usage.

Once you hang the flowers they do the rest!

In The Oven:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees F

  2. Spread the petals on a baking sheet with out overlap and evenly spaced

  3. Heat in the oven for ten minutes, then check the petals

  4. If the petals are not as crisp as you need or not completely dry then put them in again for another 10 minutes

I recommend using a silicone baking mat so that the plants don't stick to your baking sheet!

In The Microwave:

  1. Separate what you want to dry from the rest of the plant

  2. Place the plants between two paper towels

  3. microwave for one minute then check on the herbs or petals

  4. If they aren't dry or crisp, continue microwaving in 30 second intervals.

Storing:

Once you have your dried herbs and petals proper storage is necessary to make sure they don't get added moisture or mold. It also keeps them fresh! Airtight glass containers ensure that the herbs and petals will keep as long as possible.

Cooking with dried herbs:

Dried herbs have a more intense flavor than fresh ones, and you will need less when cooking! You will need three times the amount of fresh herbs in a recipe than you will with dried herbs.
